The Symphonie Fantastique was initially composed in 1830 and first performed in December of the same year under the direction of Habeneck. Berlioz however revised the work extensively during his trip to Italy in 1831-2 and in subsequent years and did not publish it until 1845. The work as we now know it is thus substantially different from the original of 1830, which can no longer be reconstructed in full detail.

The Symphonie Fantastique has always been the work with which Berlioz’s name is most closely associated. The composition of this revolutionary masterpiece marked a breakthrough in the composer’s career, at once the culmination of his years of apprenticeship, and the starting point of his mature work as a symphonic composer. The impact that Beethoven had on Berlioz is evident in the work, but no less evident is Berlioz’s originality in opening up new paths that Beethoven had not explored, and the sound world of Berlioz is entirely his own.
The programme on which the symphony was initially based went through a number of changes between 1830 and 1855. It does not need to be repeated at length here. Under the influence of opium (in the 1855 version), a young and sensitive artist (Berlioz himself), experiences a series of visions – the different movements of the symphony – in which his beloved figures as a theme, the idée fixe, which recurs in every movement, though each time in a different form (cf. the Memoirs chapter 45 in relation to Harold in Italy). The theme had already been used by Berlioz in his cantata Herminie written for the Prix de Rome of 1828 (H 29), though it is much more fully developed in the symphony than in the cantata. ...

Erich Kleiber was born in Vienna in 1890 and died in Zürich in 1956, sadly denied the lenghthy Indian summer in the concert hall and recording studio enjoyed by Bruno Walter and Otto Klemperer, distinguished colleagues from Kleiber's Berlin days. Like Walter, Kleiber had been brought up in the richly productive environment of turn-of-the-century Vienna, a city dominated musically by the all-encompassing genius of Gustav Mahler. Though Kleiber was neither a pupil nor a disciple of Mahler, he often conducted Mahler's more avant-garde music (most interestingly the much maligned, notably 'classical' Seventh Symphony), and he grew up with a first-hand knowledge of Mahler's wonderfully clear-headed yet vital and supple way of conducting the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and their successors in the Viennese tradition. ...

Schumann's first plans for a symphony date back to his teens. However, after starting work on various projects that remained unfinished - the fragmentary, but nonetheless performable Zwickau Symphony among them - the composer began to vacillate, finally devoting himself for years to writing solely for the piano.

When Schumann eventually leapt into the deep waters of the symphony, it was as a reaction to his marriage to Clara Wieck, to wich the bride's father agreed after long years of opposition. Thus Schumann's First Symphony was given its successful premiere on 31 March 1841 in Leipzig, under the baton of none other than Felix Mendelssohn. As he did so often, Schumann proved himself from the word go to be a master of a genre that he was just setting out to conquer. Be it Lieder or chamber music, orchestral works or the concerto, he seemed to find it easy to tackle something new. ...

...Celibidache always oriented himself in his work on the requirements of Brahms's tonal language: on its seriousness (Brahms himself is on record as saying he had never laughed in his music) and its controlled, internalized passion; on the severe, aristocratic strictness governing not only expression but even the most personal and intimate emotions; on the weight and the depth always to be found even in the most cheerful and gracious movements; on Brahms's particularly pronounced awareness of metrical forces and their contrasts; on his preference for dark colours (particularly clear in the absence of the violins from the opening movement of the German Requiem). "This is a man who knows no fat, only bones and muscles!" Celibidache resorted to images like this to keep his musicians and singers away from all sentimentality and sugar-sweetness, all programmed, stereotyped effects, all superficial and self-satisfied enthusiasm. ...
