When Schumann eventually leapt into the deep waters of the symphony, it was as a reaction to his marriage to Clara Wieck, to wich the bride's father agreed after long years of opposition. Thus Schumann's First Symphony was given its successful premiere on 31 March 1841 in Leipzig,under the baton of none other than Felix Mendelssohn. As he did so often, Schumann proved himself from the word go to be a master of a genre that he was just setting out to conquer.
